Tripod Crest Expands its Fleet

Tripod Crest has invested in three new Volvo FH tractor units to assist with the increasing demand for transporting pavers, rollers and asphalt planing equipment. Some of this kit weighs in excess of 38 tonnes so it is vital to have an appropriate fleet.

The company has just taken delivery of the second of the three STGO Cat 2 plated tractor units with Globetrotter cabs and rear air suspension. The third is expected to join the company’s 34-strong fleet of trucks imminently. Tripod Crest’s workshop manager, Craig Baker, says: “When it came to renewing the vehicles we use for the movement of our road construction machinery we were particularly impressed with the economy, reliability and capability of the new Volvo FH tractor units.”

The three tractor units, which are all identical specification, boast a 3.2m wheelbase with twin tyre tag axles.

“Tripod Crest is a round-the-clock operation and our drivers sometimes spend the whole week away, which is why we have specified these trucks to a very high standard,” says Craig. “Where the cab ordinarily features twin bunks we have specified a single bed to give more space. We have introduced fridges, microwaves, a high power audio system with integrated Bluetooth and USB inputs and even coffee makers because, for us, it is important we provide a driver friendly environment.”

Powered by the 12.8 litre Volvo D13K engine producing 540hp and up to 2600Nm of torque delivered to the road through 12-speed I-Shift transmission, the new tractor units are also equipped with cruise control, the Volvo electronic stability program, forward collision warning with emergency braking and the Volvo lane keeping warning system.

Inside, the trucks feature the Drive Plus cab package featuring leather interior, arm rests on the air suspended comfort driver’s seat and electrically controlled air conditioning with sun sensor.
