Weekly summaries are being compiled for our new tractor, providing an overview of Chris’s driving styles, idling levels and braking patterns. Monthly reports are then supplied with a broader picture of overall driving techniques and fuel consumption levels over the number of miles travelled.
Monitoring is undertaken using a number of devices and techniques. For example, the tractor is fitted with a piece of kit that registers idling time and automatically switches the engine off after five minutes of being stationary. Additionally, going forward drivers will be receiving training from Scania on how to drive as economically as possible, in a way that makes good common sense and does not have a negative impact on other working priorities.
This activity has been very well received to the extent that, in due course, we are hoping to have our own in-house assessor and trainer, who will have been schooled in Scania’s own techniques.
While it is early days, there is already an improvement in fuel consumption, with MPG having increased from 3.7 to 4.2 – with a target of between 4.5 to 5.
Feedback from Chris and Craig so far has been really positive and both are keen to involve more team members and vehicles in the coming months.
